- Fixing of street light/Lighting Up our Communities
Community Project Overview
This project was conceived by the prefects of the school after they heard that a staff member had been robbed on their way to work at dawn and it was attributed to darkness along the street. Other residents had also complained of similar attacks and therefore the students decided to lighting up their community by replacing old bulbs and fixing new lights. The execution of the project involved students, a teacher and an electrician.
Evangelism
The school prefects decided that just fixing of street lights was not enough and decided to go an evangelism drive by sharing on the love of God in the school community and outside the school community.
Impact on school mission
- The mission of the school is to provide a Christ-centred and responsive learning environment for the student, teachers and the community to thrive spiritually, academically and socially. Hence exhibiting the LOVE OF GOD through action and deeds emphasizes the Bible verse in Mark 12:31 which says, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’. This helps to build a spiritual and social bond within the community
- Helping to fight crime in the community is a social duty of everyone in the community as the Bible admonishes us to be our brother’s keeper.
Which Christ-like Behavior(s) did the project emphasize on and how was this behavior communicated to your community?
The project focused on ‘ LOVE’ and Collaboration. This was communicated in two forms.
- Students went on the street preaching the message of ‘love’ holding placards with bible verses on love. Another event also took place on the school premises where the chaplain prefect preached a message of love to the entire school.
- Love was communicated to the community through the provision of street lights to help fight crime on our streets. We collaborated with members of the community to get it done. Through Collaboration, we were able to add five new set of street lights to the already existing ones and fixed some faulty ones.
Community Impact
- The students now understand and value each other by showing love. An example is students are now reporting lost but found items to teachers so they can be given back to their owners. Awareness has been raised in the community about showing love through evangelism.
- The street is now well lit and some vendors who trade at night/dawn have testify that the street lights have brought some form of security which makes them feel safe as they trade.
- Other community members have shown their appreciation of our love and kind gesture. The PTA who also supported us, are happy with the students initiative and we believe that they will come on board fully to help transform our community.
